Discovering Who You Are by Knowing From Whence You Came

In-laws of My Grand Uncle

Have you ever noticed a large massive tree with an incredible amount of branches and roots embedded in the ground?  Have you stopped to consider how old that tree may be or its early origins?  A tree contains many branches but it didn't start out that way.  Gradually and over a period of time, additional branches were added that developed into a full blown conglomerate of limbs, leaves, bark and, underneath it all, ROOTS.

My blog, as you've noticed, is about Genealogy.  I was inspired by the late Mr. Alex Haley and the  introduction of his book and television series, "Roots: The Saga of An American Family" in 1976.  What I learned most from Roots is the value and importance of family.  From the old African, Kunte Kinte, an ancestral relative of Mr. Alex Haley, I was inspired to start researching my maternal and paternal roots not only to find out "from whence I came", but also to discover who I am genetically.  I also was interested in finding out what stories and facts I would discover about my roots or ancestors during my journey.

In this blog, I'll be sharing some of the things I discovered along the way, including some of the "how-to's" of genealogy with an emphasis on African-American genealogy; however, discovering your family starts off basically the same for everyone.  Well that's all for now, but I hope you'll check back periodically to see what I've posted about my discovery of "from whence I came" and along the way, entice you to get excited about "discovering you are by knowing from whence you came!"
